Firefighter Employment Opportunities

If you are interested in becoming a firefighter, the first step is to visit City Hall located at 115 East M. L. King Jr. Dr. The Human Resource Manager will inform you about career opportunities, eligibility requirements, application forms and testing dates, which are only available when positions are open.

 

Typical Firefighter Duties

Firefighting involves difficult and skilled physical work and continuous training, as well as handling emergency and life-or-death situations. In addition to fighting fires and rescuing citizens from burning buildings, firefighters also:

  • Work with citizens to promote fire prevention and education
  • Perform community services
  • Provides emergency medical care as a first responder
  • Extinguish fires and perform post-fire salvage and cleanup
  • Protect the environment from hazardous material incidents
  • Peform heavy rescue operations from cars and collapsed buildings
  • Conduct and participate in a variety of training programs to learn the latest firefighting technology and methods.
