Minimum Qualifications
- Must be 18 years of age or older
- Must be a high school graduate or possess a G.E.D.
- Must successfully pass a physical health examination
- Must have visual acuity of 20/100 uncorrected in each eye, correctable to 20/30 in both eyes; depth perception must be within normal range; must be able to distinguish and identify pure red, green, blue, amber, or yellow and white colors in a typical job setting
- Hearing in both ears must be within normal range.
- Strength and stamina sufficient to lift and carry equipment and patients weighing up to 150 pounds and be able to wear self-contained breathing apparatus
- Must pass a physical agility test.
- Must possess a valid Georgia Drivers License
- Must be legally authorized to work in the United States
- Must pass a comprehensive background investigation
- No Felony Convictions (except House Bill 654)
Standard Testing
- Written Test: Measures reading comprehension, mechanical and spatial aptitude, mathematics, and the ability to comprehend and learn firefighting material from written instructions.
- Panel Oral Interview: Measures interpersonal relations, oral communication skills, judgment and analytical ability, and your motivation to be a firefighter.
After The Testing . . .
- Those applicants who successfully pass the examinations will have their name placed on an "eligible list" and may be called for a final job interview.
- After being hired, training begins here and at the Georgia Public Safety Training Center , Fire Academy . During this time, you will participate in classroom instruction and learn the mechanics of fire suppression as well as hands on training.
Suggested Courses
- Community College courses in Fire Science, English grammar and reading comprehension, basic math, and public speaking.
- First Aid courses such as EMT I or Paramedic Certification, CPR, Advanced First Aid.
- Community Involvement - volunteer service organizations.
