Composting

Composting is nature's way of recycling. Compost forms naturally when organic waste, such as leaves, tree limbs, grass clippings, etc. are decomposed. It is a dark, crumbly material that looks and feels like potting soil. Compost is an excellent soil conditioner and an excellent source of minerals and nutrients, which are essential to plants . Last year, the City of Hinesville 's Department of Sanitation collected and composted over 3,500 tons of leaves and other yard debris. By recycling this organic material that once was deposited in a landfill, the city has both saved money and saved landfill space while providing a valuable product to the citizens of Hinesville. Compost is the ultimate soil amendment, and can be used in backyards, lawns, gardens, street tree pits, and for indoor plants . The city offers this compost free of charge to all city residents. Call 876-8216 for further information and directions on how to obtain compost .
